Against the backdrop of global trade connectivity and the accelerating rise of port-based economies, steel, as a core material in port and terminal construction, is supporting the efficient and safe operation of billion-ton-capacity ports with its high strength and adaptability. From the deepwater shorelines of 10,000-ton berths to the intelligent equipment of automated yards, steel, through diverse technological forms, forms the "steel backbone" of port infrastructure and operating systems, becoming a key support for the transformation of ports towards smart and intensive operations.

The carrying capacity of core terminal facilities relies on breakthroughs in steel performance. The container terminal's quay crane main beams and gantry crane booms are constructed from Q690-grade high-strength structural steel, boasting a yield strength exceeding 690 MPa. It can withstand the repeated lifting loads of 50-ton containers, while also reducing equipment energy consumption through lightweight design. Caisson-style wharves at deepwater berths rely heavily on weathering steel and marine engineering steel. By adding alloying elements like copper and chromium, these steels form a dense oxide film in the corrosive environment of seawater, extending the structural lifespan to over 50 years—two to three times longer than ordinary steel and significantly reducing wharf maintenance costs.

Steel's adaptability to extreme operating conditions highlights its technological advantages. In port environments characterized by high salt spray and strong typhoons, specialized steels demonstrate excellent fatigue and impact resistance. For example, the rail beams in the port yard are made of wear-resistant steel with a surface hardness exceeding HB400, capable of withstanding the long-term wear and tear of container trucks. The steel sheet piles in the wharf breakwaters are cold-formed and treated with corrosion protection. While they withstand the impact of high waves, they also effectively reduce erosion from seawater infiltration, creating a solid "protective barrier" for the port.

Smart port development is driving the upgrading of steel applications. The automated guided vehicle (AGV) tracks at the automated container terminal are manufactured from high-precision cold-drawn steel, ensuring track flatness tolerances within 2mm and guaranteeing precise operation of the AGV equipment. The three-dimensional racking used in the terminal's intelligent warehousing utilizes a combination of high-strength H-shaped steel and thin-walled steel sections to achieve a high storage density of 15 meters while maintaining structural stability, providing hardware support for efficient port operations.
