Diverse application scenarios are driving innovation in steel applications. In the aerospace sector, TC4 titanium alloy steel (although classified as a titanium alloy, it is often categorized as a specialty steel) boasts high strength and low density.
As high-end manufacturing upgrades toward precision and intelligent manufacturing, steel, with its superior mechanical properties, machinability, and stability, has become a cornerstone material for the machining industry. From machine tool spindles and engine crankshafts to heavy machinery gears, steel, through precise material selection and processing, transforms raw metal into the core components that power industrial operations. Steel not only determines the precision and lifespan of mechanical equipment, but also drives machining technology toward micron- and nanometer-level precision, becoming a key force supporting the high-end manufacturing system.
The manufacturing of core components relies on precisely matched steel properties. Spindle components in machine tools are often made of 40CrNiMoA alloy structural steel. After quenching and tempering, its hardness reaches HRC28-32. This material combines high strength with excellent toughness, allowing it to withstand the centrifugal forces and cutting loads of high-speed rotation, ensuring spindle radial runout is controlled within 0.005mm. Engine crankshafts, on the other hand, are made of 38CrMoAlA nitrided steel. After surface nitriding, its hardness reaches over HV850, increasing wear resistance by 3-4 times. This allows it to withstand the wear caused by long-term reciprocating motion and extend the engine's service life to over 10,000 hours. The differentiated performance requirements of steel materials for components in different operating conditions are driving the development of customized steel materials.
Precision control and processing efficiency highlight the technological advantages of steel. In precision mold processing, S136 stainless steel, with its excellent polishing properties and corrosion resistance, can achieve a surface roughness of Ra0.02μm after electrospark machining, meeting the high-precision molding requirements of optical components and medical devices. Track plates for large-scale construction machinery utilize NM450 wear-resistant steel, which has a Brinell hardness of HB450. Through flame cutting and welding, it can withstand the impact and friction of harsh working conditions, reducing the frequency of component replacement. Machinability and weldability, among other processing properties, directly impact machining efficiency. For example, the addition of elements such as sulfur and lead to free-cutting steel can increase cutting speeds by 20%-30%, reducing processing costs.
Diverse application scenarios are driving innovation in steel applications. In the aerospace sector, TC4 titanium alloy steel (although classified as a titanium alloy, it is often categorized as a specialty steel) boasts high strength and low density. Through five-axis machining, it can be made into aircraft engine blades, meeting the performance requirements of extreme high-altitude environments. In the medical device sector, 316L stainless steel, through laser welding and precision polishing, is used to create surgical instruments that are not only corrosion-resistant and non-magnetic, but also safe to use through high-temperature sterilization. Furthermore, green manufacturing concepts are driving the upgrade of steel towards low-carbon production. Steel produced using short-process technology reduces carbon emissions by over 50%, which aligns well with the energy conservation and consumption reduction needs of the machining industry.
